“Pink Dok Kra Jiao flowers bloom amidst the mist. Visit the land’s end viewpoint and unique natural rock formations.”
Dok Kra Jiao Blooming Field, Pa Hin Ngam National Park is located on the Phang Hoei Mountains in Chaiyaphum Province, a popular rainy season tourist destination in Thailand. Especially from June to August every year, when the Dipterocarp forest is adorned with the pinkish-purple hues of “Dok Kra Jiao”, also called Siam Tulip, in full bloom.
The wonder of Dok Kra Jiao lies in its growth cycle, as it stays dormant underground during the dry season and emerges quickly after the first rains, transforming the field into a large natural flower carpet amidst cool weather and morning mist, offering a romantic and tranquil atmosphere perfect for relaxation.
Most Dok Kra Jiao in the area are of the Curcuma alismatifolia species, related to ginger and turmeric. The apparent pink “flower” is actually a bract, while the true flower is small and blooms inside, making it an endemic plant thriving in the highlands and moist soil of Lower Northeastern Thailand.
The area of Pa Hin Ngam National Park stands at an average altitude of 800–850 meters above sea level, keeping the climate cool nearly all year round. During the rainy season, the place is enveloped in morning mist. Many tourists visit to experience the sea of mist and flower fields in full bloom, an encounter rarely found in Thailand.
The park offers systematically organized tourist trails with a sightseeing tram service to various spots, starting at the land’s end viewpoint, a high cliff offering expansive views of the Central and Northeastern regions. On some days, stunning dense seas of mist can be witnessed early in the morning.
The land’s end viewpoint is also one of the most beautiful sunrise viewing spots in Chaiyaphum province. On clear days, one can see undulating mountain ranges stretching far with white mist covering the valleys below, creating a serene and refreshing ambiance.
Another highlight is the Wood Boardwalk nature trail cutting through the Dok Kra Jiao fields, allowing tourists to walk amongst and photograph the flowers up close without disturbing the ecosystem. There are also beautiful natural photography spots along the way, suitable for photographers, couples, and families.
The nature trail within the flower fields is designed for sustainable ecological conservation, limiting foot traffic to the boardwalk to prevent trampling on the Siam Tulip and ground flora, which take considerable time to recover. Visitors are encouraged to maintain cleanliness and stay on designated paths.
Besides the flower fields, Pa Hin Ngam National Park is famous for its strangely shaped natural stone formations, formed by millions of years of wind and rain erosion, such as the FIFA Cup Rock, Radar Rock, and Giant Hen Rock, showcasing the area’s geological wonders.
These rock formations arose from ancient sandstone layers eroded by wind, rain, and varying temperatures over time, resembling various objects in the imagination of onlookers, making it another unique feature that differentiates Pa Hin Ngam National Park from other natural attractions in Thailand.
Within the park, one can also find a rich variety of flora and fauna, such as dry evergreen and deciduous forests, several bird species, squirrels, and small wildlife adapted to highland ecosystems, allowing nature lovers to appreciate the forest’s richness throughout the walking trails.
During the Dok Kra Jiao Blooming Festival, the park hosts tourism promotional activities and local cultural events, including selling OTOP products, local Chaiyaphum cuisine, and additional tourist services to accommodate visitors from across the country.
Thanks to the cool rainy season climate, abundant natural views, and the rare beauty of wildflowers that can be seen only once a year, Dok Kra Jiao Flower Field at Pa Hin Ngam is a must-visit destination for nature lovers wanting to experience the charm of the rainy season in Thailand.
