“The Aiyerweng Sea of Mist is one of the most popular spots in Betong where locals and tourists come to admire the sea of mist along with the beautiful sunrise in the early morning.”
The Skywalk Aiyerweng and Aiyerweng Sea of Mist are located along the Sankalakhiri mountain range near the Thai–Malaysian border. The area features complex mountainous terrain and deep valleys that act as a natural “air basin.” At night, moisture from the rainforest rises, and as temperatures drop in the early morning, it condenses into thick mist covering the landscape below.
A key factor behind the year-round sea of mist is its proximity to Hala-Bala Forest, a vast tropical rainforest rich in biodiversity. This forest serves as an excellent moisture reservoir, creating a unique microclimate—unlike northern Thailand, where mist is mostly seasonal.
The area was formerly known as “Microwave Hill” because it housed a telecommunications relay station operated by Telephone Organization of Thailand. Its elevation of over 2,000 feet made it ideal for signal transmission across mountainous terrain.
As its scenic beauty became widely recognized, the site was developed into a major natural tourist attraction through collaboration between government agencies and local communities. Today, it stands as a key landmark of Betong District.
The skywalk itself is designed to blend modern architecture with the surrounding natural landscape:
-
Main structure: A tower approximately 45 meters high (equivalent to a 6-story building), built to withstand wind and vibration
-
Glass walkway: Extending 63 meters, making it one of the longest skywalks in ASEAN
-
Safety glass: Constructed with multi-layered tempered laminated glass, ensuring high strength and safety
-
Functional design: Each level serves a purpose, from reception areas to open-air panoramic viewpoints
The design emphasizes an immersive experience with nature while minimizing environmental impact.
Visiting here is not just about seeing—it’s about experiencing multiple dimensions at once:
-
Sea of Mist: The mist flows slowly like ocean waves, with mountain peaks appearing like islands
-
Sunrise Phenomenon: Early sunlight gradually transforms the mist from soft white to golden and orange hues
-
Landscape reveal: As the mist clears, the lush green canopy of the rainforest unfolds in panoramic view
-
Distant scenery: On clear days, visitors can see mountain ranges in Malaysia and even Bang Lang Dam in the distance
The period between 05:30 – 07:30 AM is considered the “golden time,” when all elements come together most beautifully.
