“See giant natural rocks spanning the Mae Kai River, creating an archway for water to flow through, amidst a lush and tranquil forest.”

Pha Nam Lod is a natural attraction with outstanding geological and landscape features of the Mae Kai River. It originated from gigantic rocks stacked naturally above the waterway, forming a channel or rock tunnel through which water flows all year round. This characteristic is a result of millions of years of continuous geological processes, rock weathering, and erosion by water currents, leading to a unique and rarely seen landscape in Thailand.

The Pha Nam Lod area consists of several large rocks with varying shapes. Some rocks show cracks and layered patterns that clearly reflect their geological formation history. When water flows through the rock channels, it creates echoing sounds inside the cavity, similar to a natural tunnel. Especially during the rainy season, when water levels rise, you can see the currents rushing beautifully through the rock channels. During the cool and dry seasons, the water becomes clear enough to see the riverbed below, making it ideal for photography and studying nature.

The Mae Kai River is an important waterway in the Mae Taeng area, originating from the mountain ranges in northern Chiang Mai Province before flowing into Mae Ngat Somboon Chon Dam. The water flowing through Pha Nam Lod is therefore clear and cool all year round. It is also a habitat for small aquatic animals, shrimp, freshwater crabs, and various local fish, as well as a rich ecosystem of mixed deciduous and dry evergreen forests.

The surrounding area is shaded by large trees such as Yang Na (Dipterocarpus alatus), Takhian (Hopea odorata), and various native species. Ferns, mosses, and lichens cover the rock surfaces, indicating good air quality and humidity, making the temperature here cooler than the surrounding plains. It is ideal for relaxation, breathing fresh air, and escaping the hustle and bustle of the city.

Pha Nam Lod is also a destination for nature lovers, photographers, and those interested in geology, as it offers many photographic angles. These include a frontal view revealing the water flowing under the rocks, a view from the riverside rocks showing the water flow, or a view from above the rock cliff overlooking the lush green forest. In the morning, sunlight pierces through the tree canopy, creating 'God Rays,' which, if the air is humid, significantly enhances the beauty of photographs.

Although it remains a natural attraction, the area is gaining popularity among hikers, cyclists, and travelers along the Muang Kai-Mon Ngo travel route, as it is easily accessible and requires only a few minutes' walk from the parking area. It is suitable for families and tourists who want to experience nature without long-distance hiking.

Additionally, Pha Nam Lod can be part of a one-day trip itinerary combined with Mon Ngo Royal Project, Dan Tewada, Mae Ngat Somboon Chon Dam, Si Lanna National Park, Wat Den Salee Sri Muang Gan and other attractions in Mae Taeng District, allowing visitors to experience nature, culture, and recreational activities all in one day.

Currently, Pha Nam Lod remains a highly pristine ecotourism site. Tourists should help preserve the ecosystem by not littering, not defacing rocks, and avoiding moving rocks or natural organisms, to ensure this area retains its beauty and serves as a natural learning ground for future generations.

How to Get There
  • From Chiang Mai city center, take Highway 107 (Chiang Mai–Fang) heading towards Mae Taeng District. When you reach Mae Malai Market, turn onto Highway 3052, heading towards Muang Kai Sub-district. Continue driving along the uphill road for approximately 20–25 kilometers. You will find signs directing you to Pha Nam Lod periodically. You can park at the designated parking area and then walk about 200–300 meters down to the stream to see Pha Nam Lod. The walking path is not very long, but it involves natural rocks and terrain, so appropriate footwear for walking is recommended.

Travel Tips
  • The road to Muang Kai Sub-district is a winding mountain road. Please check your vehicle's condition and drive carefully.
  • Wear non-slip shoes or hiking boots, as the rocks along the stream can be wet and slippery, especially after rain.
  • Late rainy season to early cool season (approximately October–January) is the most beautiful time, with clear water, cool air, and ideal conditions for photography.
  • Prepare drinking water, snacks, and sun protection, as there are not many shops or facilities nearby.
  • Help preserve nature: do not litter, do not write on rocks, and avoid swimming when the current is strong.
