“A symbolic Western-style tower built to celebrate Kawagoe’s designation as the first city in Saitama Prefecture, located just across from Kawagoe Hikawa Shrine.”
Kawagoe City Memorial Tower is located in Miyashitamachi, Kawagoe, Saitama Prefecture. It stands directly opposite Kawagoe Hikawa Shrine, one of the city’s most famous Shinto shrines, making it easy to visit both landmarks in one stop.
The tower was constructed in 1922 to commemorate Kawagoe’s milestone achievement of becoming the first officially designated “city” in Saitama Prefecture. Its Western-style architecture reflects Japan’s early modern era and contrasts noticeably with the traditional Edo-style warehouse buildings found in the nearby “Little Edo” district.
Surrounded by a peaceful green space, the memorial tower offers a quieter and more relaxed atmosphere compared to the bustling Kurazukuri Street area. From here, visitors can also walk just a few minutes to Kawagoe Castle Honmaru Palace, making it part of a convenient historical walking route in Kawagoe.
