Prasat Baan Panna was built in the 18th Buddhist century according to the royal aspirations of King Jayavarman VII to serve as an "Arokayasala", or community hospital, along the ancient route. This was driven by Mahayana Buddhist beliefs focused on alleviating suffering and illness for the people in various cities of the ancient Khmer kingdom.
