“Khao Chang Phueak is renowned for its thrilling “Knife Edge Ridge” trekking route, offering panoramic mountain scenery, sea of mist, and pristine nature within Thong Pha Phum National Park.”

Khao Chang Phueak (Khao Chang Phueak) is one of Thailand’s most famous and challenging trekking destinations, located within Thong Pha Phum National Park in Kanchanaburi Province. Rising approximately 1,249 meters above sea level, it is the highest peak in the park and is best known for its dramatic ridge trail called the “Knife Edge Ridge.”

The trekking route is approximately 8 kilometers long, taking around 4–6 hours to complete. The trail begins near E-Tong Village, passing through forested areas, grassy ridges, and steep mountain slopes before reaching the iconic ridge section. The narrow pathway, with deep cliffs on both sides, creates an exciting and unforgettable experience for adventure travelers and trekking enthusiasts.

One of the most talked-about sections is the Knife Edge Ridge, where the pathway becomes extremely narrow and steep. In some areas, there is only enough space for a few careful steps. Visitors must walk slowly and maintain focus throughout the route. Park officials provide safety ropes along certain sections to assist trekkers. This thrilling challenge has made Khao Chang Phueak a legendary hiking route among Thai outdoor travelers.

At the summit, visitors are rewarded with stunning 360-degree panoramic views overlooking the mountain ranges of both Thailand and Myanmar. On clear days, the distant Vajiralongkorn Dam can also be seen. During the cool season, the mountain becomes one of the country’s best locations for watching the morning sea of mist and breathtaking sunsets. Sunrise over the mist-covered mountains creates an especially magical atmosphere.

The summit area also serves as a one-night camping ground, allowing visitors to experience cool mountain air and peaceful surroundings overnight. Temperatures can occasionally drop below 10°C during winter, making it an ideal destination for campers seeking a true mountain adventure under star-filled skies.

Khao Chang Phueak lies within the rich western forest complex of Thailand, an ecologically important area home to wildlife such as serows, wild boars, barking deer, and numerous bird species. The landscape includes evergreen mountain forests and natural grasslands that change beautifully with the seasons. Visitors are encouraged to help preserve the environment by avoiding littering and following all national park regulations.

The mountain is only open to tourists for a limited period each year, typically from November to January, depending on weather and safety conditions announced by the national park. To protect the fragile environment, visitor numbers are strictly limited to approximately 60 people per day. Advance reservations through Thong Pha Phum National Park are required, and all trekking groups must be accompanied by park guides and porters for overnight camping.

For trekking lovers, campers, and adventure seekers, Khao Chang Phueak offers a once-in-a-lifetime experience filled with breathtaking scenery, thrilling trails, and unforgettable moments above the clouds. Nearby attractions such as E-Tong Village, Pilok Mine, and Noen Chang Suek Viewpoint are also popular stops for travelers visiting the Thong Pha Phum area.
