“Phichit Old Town Park features Wat Mahathat from the Ayutthaya period, Chalawan Cave from the Krai Thong legend, the Phichit City Pillar Shrine, and a spacious green park preserving ancient moats and city walls.”

Phichit Old Town Park is a historical area that feels like a journey back in time. Its key attractions are divided into the following sections:

Wat Mahathat

Located at the center of the ancient city, Wat Mahathat is an Ayutthaya-era temple featuring a significant pum-khao-bin (lotus-bud) stupa and an old vihara with remains of Buddha images and architectural foundations, offering valuable insight into Phichit’s historical development.

Chalawan Cave

Situated south of Wat Mahathat, Chalawan Cave is an underground passage. At its entrance stands a sculpture depicting Krai Thong battling Phaya Chalawan, the legendary giant crocodile. Although entry into the cave is currently closed for safety reasons, it remains a popular photo spot symbolizing the influence of Thai classical literature.

City Pillar Shrine and Statue of Phraya Khotrabong

This area serves as the spiritual center of the park. Inside the elegant shrine are the Phichit City Pillar and a statue of Phraya Khotrabong (Por Pu Khotrabong), the founder of Phichit, where visitors come to pay respects and seek good fortune.

Ancient Moats and City Walls

Along the park’s walking paths, visitors can observe remnants of earthen walls and ancient moats forming an oval shape around the old city. The surrounding area is a shaded botanical park, ideal for combining historical exploration with nature walks.

How to Get There
  • By Private Car: From Phichit city center, take Highway No. 115 (Phichit–Sam Ngam) for about 5 kilometers, turn left onto Highway No. 1068, and continue for approximately 2 kilometers. The park entrance will be on the right.
  • By Public Transport: Tuk-tuks or motorcycle taxis can be hired from Phichit Railway Station or the city market to reach the park conveniently.

Travel Tips
  • For history lovers: Reading the informational signs around Wat Mahathat will help you better understand the history and founding of Phichit.
  • Preparation: As the area is open woodland with surrounding moats, bringing mosquito repellent and wearing comfortable walking shoes is recommended.
  • Photography spots: The sculpture scene at Chalawan Cave and viewpoints featuring the stupa of Wat Mahathat offer the most atmospheric and iconic photo opportunities.
