“Cruise the Uji River by traditional Yakatabune, enjoy seasonal scenery, refined boat lunches, and witness Uji’s world-renowned Ukai tradition using human-raised cormorants.”
Ujigawa Kanko Tsusen has long been an integral part of Uji’s cultural landscape, using the historic Uji River as a tranquil route to experience the city’s most important heritage sites. From the water, travelers can enjoy unobstructed views of Byodo-in Temple and Ujigami Shrine, framed by seasonal scenery that changes dramatically throughout the year.
The daytime Sightseeing Boat Cruise is operated using traditional Yakatabune, roofed wooden boats that create a calm, nostalgic atmosphere. Spring brings cherry blossoms lining the riverbanks, while autumn transforms the scenery with vivid red and gold foliage reflected on the water’s surface.
A major attraction for many visitors is the Boat Lunch Experience. Guests can reserve private boats and enjoy high-quality Japanese bento meals delivered directly from local ryotei (traditional restaurants). This combination of refined cuisine and slow river travel is especially popular with groups and cultural travelers.
Uji is also internationally recognized for its Ukai (Cormorant Fishing), held at night during summer. What makes Uji exceptional is its pioneering success in artificially breeding cormorants in captivity, the first such achievement in the world. These birds, affectionately nicknamed “Woodey” (ウッティー), are raised by humans from birth, making them noticeably calmer and more accustomed to people than wild cormorants.
Another rare feature is the presence of female Usho (cormorant masters), a distinction that sets Uji apart from most other Ukai locations in Japan.
