“Japan’s first officially state-supported Buddhist temple, featuring a five-story pagoda visitors can climb.”

Shitenno-Ji Temple, located in the Tennoji district of Osaka, is one of the most revered and ancient Buddhist temples in Japan. Established in 593 AD by Prince Shotoku, a key figure in introducing Buddhism to Japan, the temple’s name means “Temple of the Four Heavenly Kings”, representing the divine protectors to whom the prince dedicated the temple after a victorious battle against anti-Buddhist forces.

As Japan’s first state-sponsored Buddhist temple, Shitenno-Ji became a cornerstone of Japanese religious history and an early model for Buddhist temple architecture. Although it has been destroyed and rebuilt several times due to fire and war, the current complex was carefully reconstructed in the Asuka period style, preserving the original 6th-century design.

At the heart of the temple lies the Chūshin Garan (Central Precinct), the sacred inner compound that requires an admission fee. Within this area are:

  • Five-Story Pagoda (Goju-no-tō): Visitors can enter and climb for panoramic views of the temple grounds.

  • Kondō (Main Hall): Enshrines the image of Bodhisattva Kannon, the deity of mercy.

  • Kōdō (Lecture Hall): Used for sermons and Buddhist teachings.

Prince Shotoku also established the Four Institutions (Shika-in) within the temple complex — a hospital, pharmacy, welfare center, and educational facility — reflecting his progressive commitment to social welfare and compassion.

Other highlights include the Gokuraku-jodo Garden, a tranquil stroll garden inspired by the Buddhist Western Paradise, and the lively flea market held on the 21st and sometimes the 22nd of each month, featuring around 300 stalls offering antiques, crafts, and local food.

At the temple’s western gate stands the Stone Torii Gate, an unusual sight for a Buddhist temple and believed to be Japan’s oldest stone torii, dating back to 1294.

How to Get There

Shitenno-Ji is easily accessible via Osaka’s public transportation system.

  • Take the Tanimachi Subway Line to Shitennoji-mae Yuhigaoka Station (Exit 4) — the temple is about a 5-minute walk.

  • Alternatively, walk about 10 minutes from Tennoji Station (JR or Osaka Metro lines).
