Karesansui (The South Garden of Goten)
The dry landscape garden, or Karesansui, located in front of the Goten palace is known as the South Garden. It features a vast expanse of meticulously raked white gravel, symbolizing the purity of the ocean and the Zen concept of emptiness.
The simplicity of the raked sand creates a striking contrast against the ornate Chokushi-mon gate and the lush seasonal greenery. Viewing this "ocean of sand" from the Goten's wooden veranda offers a peaceful space for contemplation and artistic appreciation.
