Jikokuten (The Left Guardian of Chumon)
Standing on the left side of the vermillion Chumon Gate is Jikokuten, the Guardian of the East. His name translates to "Protector of the Realm" or "Upholder of the Nation."
He is depicted as a celestial general in elaborate, colorful armor with a stern expression. Often holding a sword or a trident, Jikokuten symbolizes the strength required to maintain peace and order within the sacred grounds of Ninnaji.
